Axions and a Gauged Peccei-Quinn Symmetry

چکیده
The axion solution to the strong CP problem requires an anomalous global U(1) symmetry. We show that the existence of such a symmetry is a natural consequence of an extra dimension in which a gauged U(1) is spontaneously broken on one of two branes, leaving an accidental global symmetry on the other brane. Depending on where the standard model matter lives, the resulting axion can be either the DFSZ or hadronic type. Gaugino-mediated supersymmetry breaking fits comfortably in our framework. In addition, we present a model in which the supersymmetry-breaking and Peccei-Quinn breaking scales are naturally of the same size. ∗Email: [email protected], [email protected]

Planck Scale Effects and Axions in Supersymmetry
The effects of possible explicit violation of the Peccei-Quinn symmetry responsible for the solution of the strong CP problem are studied in super-symmetric models. It is shown that automatic models with an abelian U (1) gauge symmetry are easy to construct both in the context of fundamental and composite models of axions. It is argued that it is preferable to use abelian rather that nonabelian...
متن کاملFlatons and Peccei-quinn Symmetry
We study in detail a supersymmetric Peccei-Quinn model, which has a DFSZ and a KSVZ version. The fields breaking the Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry correspond to flat directions (flaton fields) and have unsuppressed couplings when PQ symmetry is unbroken. The models have interesting particle physics phenomenology. The PQ scale is naturally generated through radiative corrections; also, in the DFSZ ...

The existence of dark matter provides strong evidence for physics beyond the Standard Model. Extending the Standard Model with the Peccei-Quinn symmetry and/or supersymmetry, compelling dark matter candidates appear. For the axion, the neutralino, the gravitino, and the axino, I review primordial production mechanisms, cosmological and astrophysical constraints, experimental searches, and prosp...
متن کامل– 1 – Axions and Other Similar Particles
Introduction In this section, we list coupling-strength and mass limits for light neutral scalar or pseudoscalar bosons that couple weakly to normal matter and radiation. Such bosons may arise from a global spontaneously broken U(1) symmetry, resulting in a massless Nambu-Goldstone (NG) boson. If there is a small explicit symmetry breaking, either already in the Lagrangian or due to quantum eff...
متن کاملAxions and Other Very Light Bosons
In this section we list limits for very light neutral (pseudo) scalar bosons that couple weakly to stable matter. They arise if there is a global continuous symmetry in the theory that is spontaneously broken in the vacuum. If the symmetry is exact, it results in a massless Nambu–Goldstone (NG) boson. If there is a small explicit breaking of the symmetry, either already in the Lagrangian or due...
